Warriors Pre-Season Game 1: Let the Stats Do the Talking

October 5th, 2009 | by jruss |

The Brandon Wright-less Warriors opened their pre-season against the Clips tonight. While I could not find the game anywhere on TV, I thought I would let the stats tell the story. So here are the stats that I found the most noteworthy following the Warriors 108-101 victory against the Baron Davis-led Clips:

  • Stephen Jackson – 1 technical foul
  • Anthony Randolph – 3 for 13 from the field with 9 rebounds
  • Azubuike – took a team high 17 shots (making 7 of them) and was the only Warrior with double digit rebounds (10)
  • Monta played only 12 minutes and was 3-8 from the field for 8 total points
  • Maggette was a +9 for the game (and had 18 points)
  • Stephen Curry was only 2 for 10 from the field BUT was a team high +12 and dished out a team high 9 assists along with a team high 5 steals
  • Finally, Anthony Morrow was 8-11 finishing with 21 points and was 4 of 6 from the three point line
All in all, I’d say it’s pretty encouraging. Don’t want to read too much into a pre-season game but I am really excited that the season is finally upon us. Next up – Wednesday at the LA Lakers.

IMO, Azubuike is the most underrated player in the league. I would love for Nellie to keep him in the starting lineup. Besides his double-double on Monday, he had no turnovers in 41 minutes. That’s something Nellie needs to notice. Morrow also needs to play a bigger role. I think the rookie should be treated as such and let these other guys who have put in their time get the most run. Seriously, A-Mo and Az were 1st and 4th in 3FG% last season. Curry has been an awful shooter since leaving the Southern Conference (28-for-90, or 31%, in six games with “Warriors” on his jersey). Heck he only hit 38% of his threes there. With all the depth, they’d be wise to have him be odd man out.
