Return of the Rone!
December 27th, 2009 | by jruss |Man, it sure makes a difference when you’ve got a big guy who is actually big and plays defense. Tonight’s 132-127 win against Phoenix showed just how important it is for the Warriors to have one of their two centers back from injury. Turiaf’s defense (especially on Amar’e Stoudamire), hustle and big bangin’ body were welcome signs against a Suns team on the back end of a back-to-back.
Of course, the Suns made like 30 three pointers, many of them from Steve Nash in the third quarter. But the Warriors had too much fight in them to lose their 8th straight.
MAD PROPS GOES OUT TO:
- Corey Maggette: I list him first because I’ve been pretty hard on him. But tonight he was awesome, shooting 13 of 17 for 33 points with 8 rebounds, but none bigger than an offensive put-back at the end of the game. He gets mad props!!
- Monta Ellis: It’s becoming expected for Ellis to score a lot of points, which he did again tonight, 33 in all. But he also had 10 assists and 6 rebounds and despite some poor turnovers, played 45 minutes of solid basketball.
- CJ Watson: When Nellie took Curry out in favor of Watson, I was pretty skeptical. But Watson held his own, made some big shots and played solid defense. I am getting more and more confident with him on the floor.
Final three random thoughts from the game:
1. I think Stephen Curry is going to be a very good player in a year or two. He’s still got a ways to go, but I am beginning to like him and the different things he can do.
2. No matter what the box score says at the end of the game, I think Vladimir Radmonovic is a scrub. That’s all I’ll say.
3. Despite going 0-5 from three point range tonight, Anthony Morrow was a +11, second only to Turiaf (+12), which means he’s making things happen even if his three-pointer isn’t falling.
Overall, I can’t believe how worked up I got during this game for a team that was 7-21 entering play. That’s what the Warriors do. Just when you are ready to disengage, they suck you right back in!
